Historical Background
Copied from the 1766 model French musket, the 1795 Springfield infantry musket was the very first official model musket of the United States. Initially with the bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel, this was rotated to the top of the barrel in 1797 and the look remained more or less the same to the end of the War of 1812. The musket gets its name from the first government armoury of the United States in Springfield, Mass. Today the armoury is a National Park.
4th Regiment of US Infantry, 1812 by Don Troiani (Parks Canada)This musket aided US troops defend the ramparts of Baltimore were the Star Spangled Banner was written, along with the earthworks around New Orleans under the watchful eye of Andrew Jackson. However its greatest test was with Winfield Scott at Lundy's Lane in 1814. Thousands of US troops stood face-to-face against British regiments exchanging volley after volley of musket fire well into the night.
Specifications
This reproduction of a 1795 Model US Infantry Musket has a .69 calibre, 44 3/4 inch long, round barrel that is made of tempered seamless carbon steel (type:BS970 no.080M40) with a threaded breech plug. The lock is made with strong durable springs and has a case-hardened frizzen cover (hammer) that throws good sparks. Both the lock and barrel are engraved or stamped with the appropriate Springfield arsenal markings. This muzzleloader's total length is 60 inches and weighs 10 pounds. We use a cyanide case-hardening factory process that makes sparking both more reliable and longer lasting. Presently no other musket provider uses this technique.
As with all our other flintlock black powder muzzleloaders, the vent is not drilled so we can ship easily to your door throughout North America and to Europe and the UK. Aside from that they are exactly like the originals. A fine addition to any collection.
