Historical

Popular with American naval and army officers were French Napoleonic patterns of swords and sabres. Among them was the French Line Infantry Sabre for the Voltigeurs and Grenadiers which is illustrated here. Aside from Oliver Perry, Captain Samuel Chester Reid of the famous Privateer General Armstong and Sailor Master Moses Roges Smith serving in the defence of New York both owned this sword. In the army, Captain Alden Partridge, Engineer and Superintendent of West Point Military Academy also was in possession of the pattern of sword, attesting to its wide popularity across the services.

US Privateer Captain Samuel Chester Reid

Design

This was a much more practical fighting sword with a curve that did not sacrifice the ability to "give point" or thrust. The blade is well balance and length that finds the "sweet spot" of offering effective length of reach with being cumbersome. The French indeed had designed an effective yet quite elegant sword. Like all of our swords, the hand forged blade is made of superior AISI 1065 high carbon steel. With our usual attention to detail, we have marked the sword with the same makers mark as the original we work from.

Blade Length: 82.5 cm / 32 1/2 inches
Overall Length: 100 cm / 39 1/2 inches
Scabbard: hand sewn leather with brass hardware - stud mount system
Steel: AISI 1065 High Carbon

Reid and his crew successfully defend the General Armstrong from British Boarding Parties, October 26, 1814.
